Caramelised Onion Sausage Rolls
The ultimate party food, these Caramelised Onion Sausage Rolls are perfect for a buffet. Like most dishes when made at home, homemade sausage rolls are so superior over shop bought. When hot and fresh from the oven, these sausage rolls are so moreish. This is a very easy recipe with a few shortcuts to make it even simpler or go the extra mile and make everything from scratch.
Easy Shortcuts
Shop bought puff pastry is easy and convenient for these sausage rolls but if you want to try homemade puff pastry, try this recipe. However, homemade puff pastry is not the easiest of recipes to master and shop bought is always reliable. A good, jarred caramelised onion chutney is also sufficient, but make your own with this recipe if you want to go the extra mile. As the chutney is combined with the sausages, making your own might be more hassle than it is worth. One ingredient that cannot be scrimped on for these caramelised onion sausage rolls is really good quality sausages. Buy the more expensive kind in the supermarket, or head to the butcher. This recipe adds water to the sausage mixture. Adding water makes the pastry puff up well, giving a crisp and puffy exterior to these delicious rolls.
Tips:
- These sausage rolls can be made in advance up to step 6 and then either placed in the fridge for up to 24 hours or frozen for up to a month. If cooking from frozen, add 10-15 minutes to the cooking time.
- Sprinkle some sesame seeds or onion seeds on top of the rolls before baking for extra flavour.
- Use any other chutney instead of caramelised onion. This Christmas Chutney would make them more festive.
